Hematite is a metallic gray iron oxide mineral with a hardness of about 6.  Its name comes from the Greek word for blood, since when it is cut, the coolant becomes red.  Gem grade Hematite is found in Europe, Brazil & the USA.

Mystic Lore: Intuitive sources say that Hematite can assist in purification of the energies of our physical and energetic circulatory systems. It is the most widely used stone for "grounding", and it is said to energize both the root chakra at the base of the spine & the "Earth Star" below our feet.
