Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with a hardness of 6 to 6.5. Its crystal patterns are cubic, pyritohedral or octahedral. Pyrite can also be massive, granular, botryoidal, stalactitic or nodular. The name Pyrite is derived from teh Greek word for fire, because striking two pieces against one another can produce sparks. Pyrite's shiny yellow metallic appearance has earned it the nickname "fool's gold." It is found all over the world, but important deposits are in Italy, Spain and Peru.
