AMETHYST
Amethyst is the violet colored form of quartz.  It is found on every continent and its hardness is 7.  Its name comes from the Greek, meaning "not drunken", and it was worn in ancient times as an amulet against drunkenness.  It was believed to bring luck, ensure fidelity, and to protect from harm.
